Understanding the "Not Completed" opportunity status

Not every opportunity that runs its course ends successfully. This article explains the Not Completed status, so you can tell it apart from Cancelled and from a straightforward Completed, and understand why it exists at all.

An opportunity is Completed only when at least one of its confirmed participants is marked as having delivered. If it has confirmed (Accepted) participants but the lead resolves that none of them delivered, the opportunity becomes Not Completed instead.

This most often comes up on the Mark as Complete step: the lead reviews each accepted participant and marks them delivered (Yes) or not (No). If every participant comes back No, the opportunity becomes Not Completed rather than Completed, and no donation or hours logs are created for it.

Example: a volunteering opportunity has five accepted participants, but on the day nobody actually shows up. When the lead goes through the Mark as Complete step and marks all five as not delivered, the opportunity becomes Not Completed - it ran, it just didn't produce any delivered work, so it shouldn't be counted the same as one where people turned up and volunteered.

Cancelled means the opportunity itself was called off before it ran its course - see The difference between cancelling and archiving an opportunity. Not Completed means the opportunity did run, but nobody on it delivered. Both are "unsuccessful" outcomes, but they answer different questions: Cancelled tells you the opportunity never happened as planned, while Not Completed tells you it happened but fell flat. Your reports and exports track them separately (look for a Not Completed At column alongside Cancelled At).
