How to post and apply to in-kind donation opportunities

Post a request for goods, equipment, space or a service - and how members respond.

Written by Sevgi Sairoglu Sezginer

In-kind donation opportunities let you request physical items, equipment, space or a service from your community, rather than money or volunteer time. This article covers posting one, how members apply, and what happens once it's fulfilled.

⚠️ Important: The In-kind donation type is interlocked with Log Donations. It's off by default; turning it on in Opportunity Types switches Log Donations on too, and you can't switch Log Donations back off while In-kind donation (or Funding) is still in use (see How to turn on donations).

Posting an in-kind donation opportunity

Choose In-kind donation as the opportunity type, then pick the kind - Materials, Equipment, Space or Service - matching the same four in-kind donation types covered in Understanding donation types. Complete the rest of the form as you would for any opportunity (linked Activity, title, host, deadline, and so on).

Example: a school careers day might post an in-kind donation opportunity for the Space kind, asking a local business to lend a function room for the afternoon, or for Materials, asking for stationery packs to give to attendees.

How members respond

Members view the opportunity and apply to offer what's needed - for instance, confirming they can supply the requested materials or lend the space. When the lead marks the opportunity complete, Goodsted records a donation log automatically, with the applicant recorded as the donor - there's no need to separately log the donation by hand.
