How delivered value is calculated

Understand how Goodsted works out the value of what you deliver, and which layer sets the price.

Written by Sevgi Sairoglu Sezginer

Delivered value is what powers the figures on your Delivery report and the progress shown on commitments and contracts. This article explains the formula, and walks through where the per-unit value it uses actually comes from.

The calculation

Delivered value = units delivered × the resolved per-unit value.

The "units delivered" side is straightforward - it's whatever your measure is tracking (hours, weeks, items, and so on). The part that needs explaining is the "resolved per-unit value," because that price isn't always set in the same place.

Where the per-unit value comes from

Goodsted looks for a per-unit value in this order, stopping at the first place it finds one:

  1. The measure - if the measure itself is already priced (for example a built-in TOMs measure that carries its own value), that value is used, and it's used everywhere that measure is delivered.

  2. The commitment - if the measure has no price of its own, Goodsted looks at the commitment it's attached to. If the commitment has set its own per-unit value, that's used instead.

  3. The activity - if there's no commitment at all (a standalone activity with no commitment delivery attached), the price set directly on that activity is used.

Walking through an example: say your measure tracks "Apprenticeship weeks" and has no built-in price of its own. One commitment using this measure has set a per-unit value on the commitment - so anything delivered against that commitment uses the commitment's price. A separate standalone activity is also tracking apprenticeship weeks, with no commitment involved - that activity has its own per-unit value set directly on it, so its delivered units use that price instead. Same measure, two different resolved prices, because each one stops at a different level of the fallback order.

⚠️ Important: Delivered value is not capped at a commitment's target. If a commitment over-delivers, its full delivered value still counts - both on the commitment itself and in the Total Delivered Value figure on the Delivery report - rather than being capped at the value of 100% of target.

📌 Note: If none of the three levels sets a value, delivery is still tracked - just in units, with no monetary figure attached. Some older "donated (value)" indicators are also being retired as redundant - if a figure looks different from what you expect on a built-in TOMs-style measure, check with support.
