When you post an opportunity, you tell members where it takes place. Getting this right matters beyond just informing applicants - it also powers search and reporting elsewhere on the platform. This article explains the location options, an admin setting that controls what the search can find, and where that data is used afterwards.
Where will this opportunity take place?
On the Post Opportunity form, choose one of:
On site - a physical location.
Remote - takes place online. No address is needed.
Flexible - no fixed location, for work that can happen anywhere (for example a self-led donation drive).
Setting an on-site location
If you choose On site, search for the location and the postcode is filled in automatically from the address you select. If the address search doesn't land precisely enough - a large park, a site with no formal street address, or a rural venue - drop a pin on the map instead to set the exact spot yourself.
Limiting which countries location search can find (admin setting)
📌 For admins: By default, location search can return results from anywhere. If your organisation only ever operates in certain countries, you can narrow this down so people don't accidentally pick an address outside your working area.
Go to the Admin Panel and open (Settings › General), then find Location search scope. Choose one of:
All countries - no restriction; search returns results globally.
Specific countries - pick a list of allowed countries (for example United Kingdom and Ireland); search only returns results from those.
Single country - restrict search to just one country.
Add or remove countries from the Countries list as needed, then Save settings. This scope applies wherever location search-and-autofill is used when posting an opportunity - it doesn't affect a pin dropped manually on the map.
Where this data is used
It powers the Location filter on the discover page, so members can find opportunities near them.
Postcode, and where available latitude and longitude, are included as columns on the Opportunity and Activity exports, so you can build your own location analysis outside the platform.
📌 Note: Accurate location data is only as useful as the search result you pick - if in doubt, use the pin drop to confirm the location is right rather than trusting an approximate address match.
