How to post a learning opportunity

Learn how to post a Learning opportunity and how it differs from a volunteering opportunity.

Written by Sevgi Sairoglu Sezginer

Learning opportunities let you offer the community a chance to grow knowledge, skills or confidence - for example a workshop, training session or talk. Unlike a volunteering opportunity (which is a Request for help), a Learning opportunity is an Offer: you're sharing something with the community rather than asking for support.

📝 Note: The opportunity types available to you depend on your app's configuration. If you don't see Learning as an option, it may have been switched off for your app - this is your programme manager's decision. Reach out to them if you think it should be available.

1. Open the Post Opportunity form

Click the + Post Opportunity button in the top right of the home page or open the profile dropdown menu and select Post Opportunity.

2. Select Learning as the type

Choosing Learning tells members this is an Offer - an experience they can sign up to take part in.

3. Link the opportunity to an Activity

Every opportunity must be linked to an Activity, which groups your delivery work, opportunities and hours together. Select an existing Activity from the dropdown, or create a new one if none fits.

👉 See also: Posting an opportunity and linking it to an Activity for a full walkthrough of selecting an existing Activity or creating a new one.

4. Review the inherited fields

Once an Activity is linked, several fields will be automatically populated:

  • Host: inherited from the Activity. You can edit this if needed - remove the inherited host and select a different one for this opportunity.

  • Beneficiary groups: inherited from the Activity. You can remove groups here if needed, but to add new ones you'll need to update the Activity first - they'll then appear on this post opportunity form.

  • Cause: no longer a field on the opportunity form. It's inherited from the Activity and shown as a badge on the Activity card.

5. Complete the opportunity details

Many fields are the same as a volunteering opportunity, so the form will feel familiar:

  • Title: make it clear what people will learn or gain - for example, "Intro to impact storytelling: a lunchtime workshop."

  • Description / what's on offer: explain what the session covers and who it's for.

  • Skills: the skills participants will build or that are relevant to the session.

6. Set timing, capacity and location

  • Timing: set a fixed date for the session, or mark it Flexible.

  • Capacity: how many people can take part.

  • Location: answer "Where will this opportunity take place?" - choose On site, Remote or Flexible. If you choose On site, search for the location and the postcode is filled in automatically, or drop a pin on the map.

  • Deadline: optionally set a sign-up deadline.

7. Add an image and post

Add an engaging image, set the privacy, and publish. Members can then discover and sign up to your Learning opportunity.
