How to post and track a funding opportunity

Learn how to post a Funding opportunity, set a target, and track pledges and donations through to completion.

Written by Sevgi Sairoglu Sezginer

Funding opportunities let you seek money or resources to support your initiative and track contributions against a target. This article covers posting a Funding opportunity, how people apply and pledge, and how donated funding is tracked when you mark the opportunity complete.

📝 Note: Funding was previously called "Sponsorship." If your app still shows the old label in places, it refers to the same opportunity type.

📝 Note: The opportunity types available to you depend on your app's configuration. If you don't see Funding as an option, it may have been switched off for your app - this is your programme manager's decision. Reach out to them if you think it should be available.

1. Choose Funding as the opportunity type

Open the + Post Opportunity form and select Funding. The form then shows the fields specific to funding.

2. Link the opportunity to an Activity

Every opportunity must be linked to an Activity, which groups your delivery work, opportunities and hours together. Select an existing Activity from the dropdown, or create a new one if none fits.

👉 See also: Posting an opportunity and linking it to an Activity for a full walkthrough of selecting an existing Activity or creating a new one.

3. Review the inherited fields

Once an Activity is linked, several fields will be automatically populated:

  • Host: inherited from the Activity. You can edit this if needed - remove the inherited host and select a different one for this opportunity.

  • Beneficiary groups: inherited from the Activity. You can remove groups here if needed, but to add new ones you'll need to update the Activity first - they'll then appear on this post opportunity form.

  • Cause: no longer a field on the opportunity form. It's inherited from the Activity and shown as a badge on the Activity card.

4. Complete the rest of the details

Fill in the title, and details (What do you need funding for?*) - so supporters understand what their contribution will achieve.

5. Set your funding target

Under Funding Details, fill in:

  • Amount needed* — enter the total funding amount required. The currency symbol shown (for example €) reflects your app's currency settings.

  • Description* — describe what the funding is for.

As pledges and donations come in, progress is tracked against the amount needed, so you and your supporters can see how close you are to the goal.

6. How supporters apply and pledge

Once published, members can apply to the funding opportunity and record a pledge toward your target. The opportunity page shows progress against the target so everyone can see momentum building.

7. Mark the opportunity complete

When the funding round is finished, mark the opportunity complete. Donated funding linked to the opportunity is then tracked and counted, so it flows through to your reporting and impact figures.
